Salmon Hover Fishing on the Columbia River
It's that time of the year again for Hover Fishing on the Columbia River! Hover Fishing is an exciting way to catch salmon; anglers can feel the fish strike while seeing the fishing rod tip bend, creating a dynamic experience.
Hover Fishing How-To:
Start by finding the bottom with one or two cranks, so that the bait is within 24 inches off the bottom. Letting the boat drift naturally with the current is important, and ensures your bait is not sideways from the rod tip. If you prefer to not constantly pay attention to the fish finder, then make sure you find the bottom and routinely adjust the depth.
Key Specs for Salmon Hover Fishing:
Rods: 7ft to 8ft long at fast action.
Line Rating: 15 to 25lb is suggested. Immediate reaction is expected when hook setting.
Reels: Casting models are preferred. Using a line counter is a plus since salmon bite while suspended. When paying close attention to the fish finder, adjust the depth on your line counter to be where the fish are at during the slow current condition.
Line: Braided line is recommended. 40lb is an ideal. 30 to 50lb will work.
Leader Test and Length: 2ft long at the range of 15 to 25lb. Fluorocarbon is a plus.
Sinker Weight: 2oz is ideal. Depending on the current conditions, fishing weights can be adjusted.
Bait: Good quality cured salmon eggs, sand shrimp, and coon shrimp are best.
Hooks: Offset octopus or big river styles tied egg loop rig. Size #2/0 or 3/0 are best.
